Now that I have handed my project in, I figured it would be a good time to reflect on what I have accomplished with it.
Essentially I chose my topic as it is an issue I found important, as well as being a topic that would easily translate into a project. By focusing on university student’s thoughts on their courses and whether they felt they were getting value for money, I had a topic that could easily be filmed, with articles that would be easy to write.
When beginning this project, I wanted to hear the thoughts of other students. I wanted to know how people felt about their university studies, whether they thought about how much each class was costing them and, consequently, whether they were getting value for money. I aimed the site at university staff and students alike. And wanted this to educate each group what the other was thinking/feeling.
If I was to change the site, I would obviously want to get a teacher’s perspective. I focused on the students views, as it was managable in the time constraints that were present. By giving a teachers’ perspective, the site would then have the ability to educate both students and teachers and the pressures each group are under.
Having not completed a website and only deveeloping a brief, I cannot fully comment on the success it was and any changes I would make to it other than what has already been said. There definitely needs to be a teachers perspective and the absence of one really detracts from the overall feel of the site. Other than that, I feel that the site is a success, giving te views of students and approaching a topic that is often overlooked.
Mauro’s Shift is a site that focuses on “A day in the life of an San Francisco Cabbie”, in this case Mauro Saldanha. It concurrently looks at the range of issues that face a cab driver in the city, using Mauro as the voice of the cab drivers themselves.
The strength of this site is its simplicity. There are two navigating toolbars flanking the area where the content appears. On the top are The Issues, including:
Gate and Gas
Turnover
Making the Gate
Medallions
Healthcare
If you click on one of these issues, you are displayed with two windows, one filled with information summarising the issue, the other with links to “experts” of the taxi industry, with videos of them discussing the topic.
The lower toolbar is made up of screen shots that link to six video diaries. These videos account for different periods during the one shift, which, like the site, show the audience what it is like to be a cab driver, as well as seeing Mauro discuss the aforementioned “issues”. When viewing these videos, in the right window, we also see a map on the left that show Mauro’s route duringĀ that particular period.
I loved the site. It was simple, informative, attractive and thus, effective in documenting its subject.
While watching Epic 2015 in class, I was reminded of a video I watched a few weeks ago.
Zeitgeist is a movement explaining how 9/11, the World Bank and the EU are all linked to the eventual loss of all our liberties. If you want a background, look it up on wikipedia.
